Weight Training
Adding weight training into your exercise program can help burn unwanted fat pounds. During weight training your body uses quite a bit of calories as fuel. At the end of your exercise session, your body will continue to burn calories at a higher rate, thus speeding up your metabolism.
Weight Training & Fat Burning
Metabolism and the rate at which it functions represents the amount of energy you need on a daily basis to sustain your life. Even when resting or sleeping, muscle tissue is very active and requires up to 45 calories per pound per day. Consequently, losing muscle (muscle atrophy) results in a reduction of your metabolic rate. Food once used as energy is now stored as fat. A sensible, long term and regular weight training program is the best way to avoid a decrease in lean muscle mass and metabolic rate.
Why exercise?
According to the American Heart Association in 2004, there are about 73 million people in the United States ages 20 and older that have high blood pressure. National Institute of Diabetes , Digestive and Kidney Diseases says, " 20.8 million people (7% of the population) has diabetes."
Exercsie is a family affair
Exercise is vital and should not only be taken personally, it should involve the whole family. New studies show that adolescents are at risk for heart disease. What this means is, if you're eating a poor diet as a young person, you will reap what you sow as an adult. Your arteries will begin to collect plaque deposits that will eventually pose a problem later on in life. Parents need to make an effort to get their kids involved in exercise and teaching them healthy eating habits. The American College of Sports Medicine recommends 60 minutes of activity for youths a day. This can be done by wrestling with dad, helping mom with chores and of course, outdoor play. I often get asked, “Can my son or daughter get involved with weight training?” My response is, it depends. If he or she shows maturity towards exercise and is willing to learn proper lifting techniques, they may be ready. Always start with lightweights, and 2- 4 sets of 6-12 reps should be sufficient. I place a strong emphasis on proper lifting technique and light to moderate weight for these growing individuals.
